Doctor Butler is the medical director of the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital laboratory. He is a native of North Carolina where he earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.  His pathology residency and fellowship in surgical pathology were preformed at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF). After training, he remained on staff at UCSF as an assistant clinical professor. Dr. Butler moved on to complete a second fellowship in forensic pathology at the University of Texas-Southwestern in Dallas, Texas.

His interests include general anatomic pathology with a particular focus on breast pathology and liver pathology, as well as laboratory management.
